Alternatively, you could use the eastern route and carry on to Barmouth along the estuary-side railpath (25 miles). From Barmouth you can get the train back to M achynlleth. Both routes are challenging but the eastern option is easier as it's slightly shorter. Time required: six hours one way route; two-day ride for return route. Route summary: around 70 per cent mainly quiet roads; 30 per cent off-road tracks (some very steep and rough). M ountain bikes are advisable, as this route is certainly not for racing bikes. It involves 2.5 miles of continuous climbing before the ancient bridleway known as the Black Road .
